my dog is petrified of fireworks???
she is a 3 year old staffordshire bull terrier and this had been going on since she was 6 months old, when some neighbours set some off while she was in the garden, she ran in to the house shaking and panting, and has been like this ever since. we have tryed putting on music, turning up the tv, giving her treats, comforting her, leaving her alone... nothing works! i feel so bad for her, she looks like she cant even breathe properly, even hearing just one bang will leave her shaking all night and she just follows me every where!. as soon as the seasons starts she wont even go for a walk, as soon as we get half way down the road she starts struggling and a few times has got out of her harness and run home, this is even during the day. what can i do? she becomes a nervous wreck, we have tried so many things is getting sedatives off the vet the best thing for her? how will they affect her??
There are 2 types of sedatives available for your dog. The first type have a slow build-up and are taken as a full course. You would need to go to your Vet a couple of weeks before firework season starts to get your dog started on these sedatives. Basically, the effect of them builds up over a couple of weeks and just chills your dog out so that he will be calmer and hopefully less bothered by the fireworks over the whole period. The dosage is then reduced when firework season is over, until your dog is completely off the sedatives again.
The second type of sedative is almost immediate in its effect (within an hour) and will cause your dog to be far more sleepy and perhaps even unable to move around normally. These are obviously much stronger but should really only be used as a one-off measure. They are not recommended for multiple use, such as every night during firework season.
For good advice, your Vet would be able to explain the pros and cons of each type to you so that you can make the best choice for your dog.
